Note

This entry should be treated with caution. Francis is shown as 'aged 40 and upwards' in the Marriage Licence for his 2nd marriage in 1761. Ages of 'mature' parties to a marriage were, however, occasionally shown as being over an arbitrary age, even if they exceeded that age considerably. In this case that is supported by the fact that Margaret Mainwaring's true age was 43 at her marriage to Francis, whereas she is shown in the Licence and Bond as '25 & upwards'.
It seems probable, therefore, that the Francis who married Margaret Yardley in 1761 and/or Elizabeth Gibson in 1772 was Francis Midford, born 1699/1700, and that there was no 'second' Francis. That would also explain the absence of the burial of a second Francis. The evidence is circumstantial, however, and it is possible that there was another Francis, the son of this Francis Mitford,

Left a legacy of £200 by the 1717 Will of his grandfather Sir Francis Blake to be paid when his apprenticeship expired. (A History of Northumberland.1893). Probably the same Francis Midford who was apprenticed 10 Jan 1716 to Samuel Holmes of City of London, citizen and stationer, for a premium of £55 0s 0d. [Research by Fiona Mitford].

Note

Marriage Allegation and Bond dated 5 May 1761. Francis Midford, of Cambden [Chipping Campden] in the County of Glocester[sic], Gentleman. Age of 40 years and upwards, and a Widower. Spouse Margaret Yardley, of Kermincham in the Parish of Swettenham, County and Diocese of Chester [i.e.Cheshire]. Aged 25 and upwards and a widow.
Swettenham parish records: Francis Midford & Margaret Yardley, both of Kermincham were married.
NB. "Cambden" refers to Chipping Campden, Gloucs. near the Batsford estate, at the time home of Elizabeth (nee Reveley), wife of Thomas Edwards Freeman and great-granddaughter of Barbara Mitford. The estate passed to the Mitford family in 1809.

Note

Bond dated 1 Apr 1772. Francis Midford of Congleton, Astbury, gent., widower. Bishop's Transcript shows date of marriage as 5 Apr. Both of this parish. Licence 5 Apr 1772 Francis Midford of Congleton, Astbury, Gent., widower, Elizabeth Gibson, spinster, both of Astbury and aged 21 years and upwards.
