Stage comedian. Worked with George Formby, Albert Burdon, Ted Ray and Tommy Handley. First stage appearance at the Corona, Felling, Newcastle upon Tyne. First London appearance 1920 at the Elephant & Castle Theatre.
Appeared at Theatre Royal, Newcastle in Jack and the Beanstalk, 1933/4 and in Cinderella 1938/9. Appeared with Albert Burdon and Jill Esmond (Laurence Olivier's first wife) in pantomime "Beauty and the Beast" 1937/8 at Lyceum, London as one of Beauty's "sisters".
Hull Daily Mail 17 Oct 1936 "Johnny Kavanagh, the new start Comedian in an uproarious musical comedy burlesque" at Variety Theatres.
Rushden Echo & Argus 5 Jul 1940: report of concert at Ritz cinema. "The concert was a gay and meritorious light entertainment......with the support of Johnny Kavanagh (comedian).....Johnny Kavanagh's "Girl Guide" act was extremely comical..."
