Having been a merchant seaman, he entered the Royal Navy at age 24 (1738/39). 5th Bt. Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy. Last seen commanding HMS Cato leaving Rio de Janeiro 12 Dec 1782 en route to India. Presumed drowned or murdered by natives on the Malahar Coast after being shipwrecked.
