Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette 6 Mar 1794 reported an earlier ceremony "In consequence of a trip from York to Gretna Green". The Reading Mercury reported 30 Jun 1794 that "The Lord Chancellor, on Saturday, comitted Wm. Stackpole, esq; to the Fleet [prison], for having made a matrimonial jaunt to Gretna-Green with Miss Blackett, a ward of the Court of Chancery".
