"Son of Joseph Blacket, wheelmaker" at baptism. Occupation:spinning wheel maker in 1799. Witness to 2nd marriage of his son William in 1824. In 1841 & 1851 wheelmaker & worsted manufacturer. Living in Framwellgate, Durham City in 1841 & 1851. Party to deeds of "a burbage and brewlead with pew in Crossgate Church, once Dean and Chapter property" 1825. (One of the neighbours was "later" Thomas Gainford (sic).) 1856 & 1862 deeds of burbages and stables and a garden with the north-south fence along the garden in Framwellgate. Lot B: neighbours to the north "a garth of Gilbert Wilkinson later Thomas Watson later Blackett and Gainforth". Lot C: "a new messuage, malthouse and cellar recently built on the site of a coachhouse [earlier than 1823 known as The Wheatsheaf"] and garden... neighbours to the north, house of John Richardson, later Henry Orton, later Blackett and Gainforth". [A History of the County of Durham, Volume 3 by William Page published in 1928 states that "what was formerly the Wheatsheaf Inn" was then occupied by The Convent of the Sisters of Mercy attached to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Godric. "On a lead rainwater head is the date 1741."] |
