Said to hold a medical degree from Edinburgh University, but no record found of this. "son of a younger branch of the Mitfords of Mitford Castle, Northumberland" (S. C. Hall "Mary Russell Mitford" in a Book of memories: Great Men and Women of the Age, from personal Acquaintance 1871). "The Mitfords' name used to be spelt with a "d" at one time, but Dr. Mitford changed it to a "t" a few years later than the period of which we are writing" (i.e. Mary Russell Mitford's early schooldays). On 17th June 1801 Mile. Midford was awarded a "prix de bonne conduite" at Hans Place school, London. ("Mary Russell Mitford and her Surroundings" by Constance Hill, 1920.) |
