An officer in the British Army. Lost a leg following injuries sustained in 1855 in the assault on Redan in the Crimean War and was tended by Florence Nightingale. Decorated with the award of the Knight, Legion de Honneur. Gained the rank of Colonel in 1878 and was an Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria that year. Appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath 1878. Gained the rank of Hon. Major-General in 1881.
