Note

Name shown as James Cavanagh at baptism. Parents John Cavanagh & Eliza Scott. Sponsors Henry O'Neill and Margaret Kennedy.
Musician. Tympanist with Carl Rosa opera company from 1866 until his death, apart from a spell in New York, and with a circus. In 1915 he wrote to Thomas Beecham, who founded the Beecham Opera Company that year, offering his services as a tympanist.
Aged 72 at death. Article in The Stage 23 Oct 1924. "One by one the old Carl Rosa brigade pass away. Now comes news of the last of the fighting Mohicans, "Jos" Kavanagh, their fifty-year working tympani player. Kavanagh - whom I spoke to three weeks ago at Hammersmith - was an American Irishman, and a good, sound musician."
