4th Bt. Succeeded to the Baronetcy on death of his uncle, Sir Edward Blackett in 1756. High Sheriff of Northumberland, 1757. M.P. for Northumberland 1768-1774. A noted philanthropist, in 1757, "due to the scarcity of provisions" he ordered a fat cow to be killed, and eight bolls of rye to be baked, and distributed among the poor neighbouring familes around Matfen, viz: "to each person a loaf of bread and a piece of meat." (Newcastle Courant 5 Mar 1757). By his marriage, he acquired substantial lands in Northumberland, including Matfen.
Bought Thorpe House in Surrey for his grandson, Edward Scott, in 1789.
